For
many fans of underground cult movies, "Slime City" is a forgotten gem
whose name is uttered in the same breath as for example “The Toxic
Avenger”, “Street Trash” and “Class Of Nuke ‘Em High”.
However, this film is not only well worth seeing, but also well worth
hearing, cause the awesome score by Robert Tomaro does not only sound
pretty wicked but it does also create a very cool and creepy atmosphere.
In the linernotes of the limited edition CD, the composer discribed the
music as a freaky mixture between Igor Starvinsky, Johnny Rotten and
Bernard Hermann. And even though I’m quite a philistine and have never
heard any of these names before, except for Johnny Rotten of course, I
still believe that this comparison fits the “Slime City” soundtrack
quite well. Cause in the same text Mr. Tomaso also speaks of his tunes
as being “edgy, punky and a little classically avant garde” and these
attributes are almost perfect to depict cranky compositions such as
“Slime Time”, “Yummy” or “Headbanging”!!
Throughout the whole playing time of round about 40 minutes you hear the
synthies scream, the basses pump and the keys rattle in best 80s style.
Some parts of this soundtrack sound menacing, creepy and dreadful, while
others are rather wild, untamed and rocking. Just like the movie itself,
the score of “Slime City” does also have a very own, snotty charme,
which every splatterfilm maniac and soundtrack aficionado simply has to
love!!
Hence I truely recommend the “20th anniversary” CD release of this
spine-chilling masterpiece of grotesque and gruesome horrorfilm music to
all fans of shockin’ and rockin’ b-movie soundtracks.
If you intend to buy a copy, I’d suggest you get it directly from Greg
Lamberson, the writer and director of “Slime City”. Cause then you can
not only order the superb
deluxe DVD
version of the movie, too, but you can also ask Greg to embellish the
cover of the CD and DVD with a cool autograph... ;) |
